South Africa - Part 5

Our next stretch in South Africa was spent on the Garden Route.  It's a 200 kilometre long area along the southern coast of South Africa.  It's a popular vacation area with South Africans and foreigners.

The coast is very photogenic.

It's just as nice a little further inland.

Just like in Canada, you have to watch for wildlife when travelling on South African roads.

Lots of baboons around

They like to lie on the road

Elephants always have the right of way

We laughed when we saw this sign

And then we saw this tortoise - they move fast crossing the road

After travelling the Garden Route, we arrived in Hermanus for our last animal adventure in South Africa - a whale watching tour.  Hermanus is a great spot to watch Southern Right Whales.

There were lots of whales around particularly mothers with their calves.

After the tour, we found a very weathered plastic version of a Southern Right Whale.  It's pretty worn but it is to scale so it gives you an idea how big the whales are compared to a tall, skinny Canadian.

One last thing to note from our whale watching tour - we saw a shark.  Yep, we couldn't find them when we went shark diving but they decided to show when we were whale watching.  Go figure.

After whale watching, all that was left for us was a short drive from Hermanus to Cape Town to catch a plane. It was another beautiful drive through an area called the Whale Coast.

This is the end of a great couple weeks in South Africa.  It was much more than we expected.
