Amalfi Coast, Italy

The Amalfi Coast is a scenic stretch of coastline in south Italy.  It's a very popular vacation destination.  We love Italian culture and food and we looked forward to lots of both in Amalfi.

Getting to the Amalfi Coast was an adventure all its own.

Our plane landed in Naples.  Naples is a place that even Italians describe as crazy.  We laugh about our overnight stay in Naples now but we weren't laughing at the time.

After reaching the coast, we drove 20 km on a twisty, turny road that is sometimes just wide enough for two small cars and sometimes narrower than that.

The effort to get to Amalfi was definitely worth it.

Town of Amalfi

Lots of narrow streets

Beautiful coastline

Lots of buildings on cliffs

Town of Positano (down the coast from Amalfi)

Great dinners outside in Amalfi's central square

Our hotel was an amazing place.

It was built into the side of a cliff

Dining room

Lots of flowers

Great view of the Mediterranean from the infinity pool

We trekked out of Amalfi for one day to visit Pompeii.  Pompeii is the ancient Roman city that was buried by a volcanic eruption almost 2,000 years ago.  The city is very well preserved and you can walk through its streets to see how people lived in those times.

The city was huge with lots of long streets

Sewage and waste was dumped into the street so you used the stones to go across

Inside a bath house

"Beware of dog" flooring at entry to a house

Ampitheatre

Painting inside a brothel

One of the unique things about Pompeii is that you can see people as well as buildings.  There are several plaster casts of people who were buried in ash from the volcano.  The expressions on their faces are a powerful sight - a glimpse at the last moments of their lives.

Our stay on the Amalfi Coast was only four short days but we weren't finished in Italy.  Next up for us was Venice.
