Iguazu Falls, Argentina

Iguazu means "big water" in the language of indigenous people who used to live near the falls.  The name is very accurate as Iguazu Falls is 2.7 kilometres (1.7 miles) wide and includes 275 individual falls.  It's tough to capture in photos but here's what we came up with.

The falls run the entire width of this photo

A closer look at part of the falls

The roar of the water is very loud

The highest point on the falls is 82 metres (270 feet)

Water rushing over the falls

The area around the falls is very lush

The falls are over twice as wide as Niagara Falls and are 1.5 times taller.  If you're a competitive Canadian, you'll be happy to know that Niagara has the highest flow rate of any falls in the world (2,400 cubic metres per second compared to 1,750 for Iguazu).  So who's the biggest?  You get to decide based on the statistic you choose.

Like Niagara, boats rides are available for a close look at the falls.  It's very well organized at Iguazu - the boat does a 'close but not too close' run to the falls so you can take pictures and then the boat does a second, much closer run after you've put your cameras away in a sealed bag.

Us after the second, really close run to the falls (we're much wetter than we look in the photo)

Here are a few photos of stuff other than the falls.

Coatis are part of the raccoon family

Just like raccoons, they're always on the lookout for food from people

Monkeys in the area have figured out that mini-bars are a great source of food

Vanessa took 15 minutes to get this shot so we had to include it

Our day and half in Iguazu Falls was a blast.  We left with wet clothes but lots of great memories.  It's definitely a place to put on your list of vacation destinations.
